Asigra is an enterprise
grade backup platform that offers a robust and efficient backup and restore
service in partnership with your chosen data host. The platform is fast and can
backup many data locations and file types including virtual environments and
endpoint devices. One platform does it all.
It can backup data from
desktop, mobile and server devices and integrates in one central locale.
Usually you would
recommend Asigra to a business when they are backing up a volume of data
greater than 1 Terabyte, as anything under this amount would most likely be not
cost-effective. That's not to say it's not a great product obviously and the
benefits to large organisations are easy to see (including cost savings).
Key features discussed
Single Integrated
platform
Typically, agent lead
backup systems require a client (software) to be installed on every machine
that is required to be backed up. This is easy to manage in a small to medium
business environment, but once you get past a certain number of clients, the resources
required for a small IT department or manager may be a burden. The Asigra
platform differs in the fact that it does not require clients to be installed
on every machine to enable backup. Asigra simply reaches out over the network
to backup operating systems, files and programs all using industry standard
coding techniques.
Many Endpoint devices
covered
The platform has the
capability to reach out over the network (whilst not disclosing the actual
location of your files to a 3rd party) to a number of endpoint devices
including Pc's, Servers, Smart Phones, iPhones, Ipad's, Tablets and the trusty
Laptop. Some client-based systems are only capable of being installed on
standard desktop, server or mac and have no provision for mobile devices.
Whilst it is still the case that most important data is usually on a windows
based environment, it is also true that more and more of this data is moving to
mobile.
De-duplication
Or more
specifically,"Integrated" de-duplication works at two levels with
Asigra, the network level over a LAN and also at the Global level (or Common
file) providing de-duplication across all sites. All data is compared by what
the contanbt actually is so even if its on a different server and called a
different name, Asigra will identify it as a duplicate and only backup one
copy.
The initial run of the
backup is what is known as a full backup but every backup from that point
onwards is only that of files that have changed. Obviously this also helps with
your bandwidth usage as your not transferring more than you need to. All data is
compressed also so you save on storage costs significantly.
