This is a two byte hex-code 0xAA55 that must exist at the end of sector or else the MBR or BIOS will return an error message and the bootstrapping process will halt. So, if you receive such errors that indicate that the boot record signature could not be found, this usually indicate that the entire boot sector has been destroyed or overwritten. In such situations, all the data that is stored on the hard drive becomes inaccessible and to restore the lost information, you will need to use your backup.
